KEGG will not be free anymore

Some of you may know that because of the insufficient support from the Japanese government,  KEGG database (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) will be not free after July 1, 2011. Click here for more details. The subscription fee only applies to KEGG FTP, whereas the KEGG web services and API will remain free. Some usage examples are to find ID mappings, develop some strategies to annotate organisms has not yet been included in KEGG etc. It is not clear yet, how other sites like DAVID will be affected. But if KEGG is an essential part of your research, it is better to look into the impact of this change.

There are many KEGG users on campus. Please spread the news and also let Dawei Lin from the bioinformatics core know who is interested in sharing the cost for an institutional license. In the message, please include your name as well as your group’s name.

For an alternative site with similar information to KEGG, you might want to consider WikiPathways.
