Seminar- “How to start your own lab”

Tuesday, April 17, 2012, 4:00-5:30 pm, 1017 Wickson Hall

Are you applying for faculty or research jobs?

Wondering how to put your best foot forward in starting a new lab?

Then this seminar is for you!

Goal: this seminar aims to provide postdocs and senior graduate students with practical tools and tips to plan and negotiate how to start an independent lab as new PIs. The discussion will focus on “wet labs” in research university settings, and on what you need to know when you apply for research positions. Specific topics include: starting equipment, creating an initial budget, negotiating a start-up package, sharing space/equipment, first key hires, strategies for growing your lab in the first years, and how to play out these plans in the job application/interview phase.

Format: three new faculty members (Erkin Seker, Electrical Engineering; Maria Marco, Food Science & Technology; Eduardo Silva, Biomedical engineering) will share their experience and advice in a panel discussion, followed by Q&A.
